Most pregnant women can continue to exercise although some changes to their routine may be necessary.
Women with these conditions should not exercise:
- Preterm labor or risk factors for preterm labor
- Vaginal bleeding
- Premature rupture of the membranes
During exercise make sure to:
- Stay well hydrated – drink plenty of liquids
- Wear comfortable clothing and a well-fitting bra
- Monitor your heart rate and slow down if you are not able to talk normally
- Avoid any exercises on your back after the first trimester
Stop exercising immediately and call your doctor if you experience:
- Pain
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Chest pain
- Uterine contractions
- Vaginal bleeding or leaking of fluid
- Calf pain or swelling
- Decreased fetal movement
Safe activities during pregnancy include:
- Walking
- Swimming
- Cycling on a stationary bike
- Low-impact aerobics
Avoid these activities during pregnancy:
- Snow or water skiing
- Contact sports such as soccer, basketball and ice hockey
- Scuba diving
- Riding a roller-coaster
- Horseback riding
